Hoover Dam

Security is very strict at the Hoover Dam, since 9/11. Hans and Stephanus had to unload all our suitcases - What a job.  Each one of us had to open his case and stand next to it.  The security guard didn’t check anything once opened?  Carla asked him why he didn’t check through our bags and he said because we didn't look nervous...?  Seems like us South Africans are used to these checks?
We had a lovely picnic at the dam.  The Americans were staring at us in amasement.  They only know FAST FOOD... oily and fatty fast foods... No wonder they are struggling with obesity in this country!

Two winged figures, 30 feet tall and made of bronze, stand on the Nevada side’s approach to the dam. Legend has it that rubbing their toes brings good luck.

“As symbols they express, according to the sculptor, the immutable calm of intellectual resolution, and the enormous power of trained physical strength, equally enthroned in placid triumph of scientific accomplishment.”

The Hoover Dam is located on the border of the states of Nevada and Arizona on the Colorado River in its Black Canyon.  These two states are in different time zones.  See the photo with the two clocks displaying the different times.
Construction started in 1931 and the entire project was completed 1935.  More than 200 engineers worked on designing the dam and 21000 men worked on building the dam.  They completed the project 2 years before the expected completion date and much below budget (what a lesson for SA)
The dam provides electricity to 3 states.  I don’t understand why, with all our water, wind and sun,  we do not have a project like this in SA in 2013??????
